About
An independent workshop reference
Woodcraft Bench publishes plain-language tool guides, workshop maths and reference data for people who build things from wood. We do not sell tools, we take no brand endorsements, and no page carries affiliate links.
Why this site exists
Most woodworking information online is built to sell you something. Tool round-ups are ranked by commission, specifications are copied from manufacturer marketing, and the articles that explain why a technique works are buried under the ones telling you which product to buy.
This site takes the opposite approach. Every tool guide explains what the tool does and what it costs you in accuracy. Every calculator exists because the maths genuinely gets done at the bench and genuinely gets done wrong. Nothing here is sponsored.
What we cover
Twenty-eight tool guides across five categories — measuring, cutting, joining, finishing and safety. Seven browser-based calculators and utilities. A wood database of eighteen species. And a blog that explains the technique behind it all.
What we do not do
- We do not sell tools or recommend specific brands.
- We do not accept payment for placement, reviews or links.
- We do not publish invented reviews, testimonials or certifications.
- We do not claim that any technique guarantees a particular result.
Written for the bench
Content is structured around what you actually do in order: measure, cut, join, finish. Tools and articles are grouped by the stage of the build they belong to, because that is how you reach for them.
Free tools, no sign-up
Every calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nothing is stored, and there is no account to create. You can use them offline once the page has loaded.
Safety taken seriously
Every power tool page carries a specific safety notice, and the footer of every page repeats the workshop safety requirements. Woodworking injuries are almost always preventable.
How to use this site
Three ways in
Learning a tool
Start at the tools index, filter by the stage of the build you are working on, and read the guide for the tool you are about to pick up.
Planning a build
Open the cut optimizer and the board foot calculator before you go to the timber yard, not after.
Building feel
Use the workshop bench to practise the sanding and finishing sequence on a simulated board, where mistakes cost nothing.
If something here is wrong, unclear or out of date, we would rather know. Use the contact page and describe the specific page and what you think is incorrect.
